Fenugreek seed is a culinary spice used around the world. Get facts and information on fenugreek to help you understand what Fenugreek seeds are how it can benefit your body and improve your health.

Fenugreek is most popular in India, who also produces most of the world’s supply. It is a common ingredient in curry and is widely used by chefs to enhance their dishes.

Fenugreek History

Fenugreek is Latin and translate to “Greek hay”. The genus, Trigonella comes from another Greel work meaning “three-angled” from the points of the “crown” around a seed. Fenugreek was used in ancient Rome as an aid to male potency. In Asia, it is used in cooking as it is a base ingredent in curry powder. It is also used in perfumes, lotions, and soaps. In some countries it is used for hair tonice and helps to cure baldness. In ancient China, it was used for problems with kidneys, hernia, impotence, and other male related problems.

* Only the fruit, the seeds, are used. They are usually in a dried form that is ground or whole (Fenugreek seed extract is also available).

How to Use Fenugreek

Fenugreek is typically used in cooking, but are used in capsules when used for medical conditions. It can be found in extract form also. You can eat up to 3 1/2 0z. (100g) of the seeds in one meal without any gastrointestinal side effects. Caution: Do not eat more as this will give you TOO much fiber.

Sorethroats can be soothed by mixing a finely ground powder with cider and warm water.

Pain can be relieved by using fenugreek in a paste form. This is also used as an anti-inflammatory agent for rashes.

Most people would not like the bitter taste of Fenugreek, but it used in capsule form for remedies of boils, eczema, and furuncles. In the US, it is in imitation maple syrups. Other countries have used fenugreek seeds for diabetics by soaking the seeds in water. The addition to a diabetics daily diet was found to decrease blood sugar levels, while raising good HDL levels.

Precautions:

Using for low blood sugar, the powder is better than using whole seeds as the powder releases more of the vanadium when your food is digesting.

Do not use if pregnant or if you are allergic to chickpeas.

Fenugreek is also recognized by many other names such as: Greek Clover, Greek Hay, Greek Hay Seed, Foenugreek, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Bird’s Foot, Alholva, Chandrika, Hu Lu Ba, Methi, Medhika, Trigonella, Bockshornsame, and Methi.

There are 15 types of mulching materials commonly used in landscapes. This is an overview of each type of mulch, including mulching depths and usefulness. Use any of these in your garden.

Types of Mulch and Mulching Materials

Bark Chips- Use 3-6 inches in depth. It has a nice appearance and is available in different sizes. Commonly used in borders and boundary plants to conserve water.

Black Plastic Sheeting- Warms cold soil in the early spring. It does prevent weeds from growing, but doesn’t add any organic material. Careful watering is needed in hot weather.

Clear Plastic Sheeting- Warms cold soil in the early spring. It does not prevent weeds from growing and does not add any organic material to the soil.

Mulch conserves water in borders

Compost- Use 2-8” deep to enrich the soil. It can also be made at home.

Evergreen Boughs- Use 8-24” deep. It gives winter protection for hardy perennials in cold climates. Remove gradually when new shoots start to come up in the spring.

Grass Clippings- Use 2-6” deep. This is a good mulch for vegetable gardens. Use them while they are green. Add in extra nitrogen to gardens to compensate for nitrogen lost as grass breaks down. Do not use herbicide-treated grass until a month or two after cutting.

Hay, Salt Hay- Use 6-12” deep. It makes a good mulch for vegetable gardens or as winter protection for hardy perennials. Salt hay has fewer weed seeds than other hay types.

Leaves- Use 2-5” when shredded, and 5-12” when whole. Shredded leaves are a good all-purpose mulch. Whole leaves blow away easily unless weighted down or contained by fences, and may be too coarse for delicate plants. Leaves tend to be acid, but vary with species. Avoid leaves of black walnut trees as they can kill other plant species.

Mushroom Soil Compost is used 1-4” creates an attracgtive soil layer, rich in nutrients. They contain gypsum and is alkaline.

Newspapers are used 1/2-2” may be shredded or used whole. Appropriate in large vegetable gardens. Unattractive unless covered by bark, pine needles, stones, or other natural substance. Must be weighted to prevent its blowing away. Avoid colored pages because of toxic inks.

Peat Moss is used 2-4” and makes an attractive mulch in flower beds. Should be wetted down and mixed with sand, vermiculite, and soil to prevent its blowing away. Somewhat acidic, though. To counter this, you can mix in some lime to counteract the acidity.

Pebbles often used 3-6” deep is a good mulch for dry gardens. It is available in various sizes and colors. Edgings of stone or brick keep them in place. Large quantities are available from building supply companies.

Pine Needles are used 4-12” deep and is slightly acidic. It is widely used around azaleas, rhododendrons, and blueberries. It is attractive and stable and may be used shredded or unshredded.

Straw is used 4-12” but tends to look messy, but it is effective and appropriate to use in vegetable gardens. Add extra nitrogen to compensate for nitrogen lost when straw breaks down.

Wood Chips used 3-8” and possibly more if used in sandy soil. It is good for building up sandy soil. You may also need to add nitrogen as the chips break down. Wood chips may harbor termites or slugs.

You will find fact and information on growing beautiful lilac varieties.

Growing Lilac Varieties

Mildew may be prevalent, so try to purchase resistant cultivars and site them in a dry, airy cool place. The most common of the lilacs, (syringa vulgaris), which blooms in May and grows best in Zones 3-7 or 8. It requires a winter chilling period to bloom well.

Lilac Varieties

The Chinese, or Rouen, lilac (S. X chinensis) blooms in the Midwest and the East in Zones 2, or 3-7 in mid-spring. This graceful 10-12’ shrub with broadly spreading branches has the color and scent of S. Vulgaris but with more flowers. S, meyeri, is a mildew resistant, rounded shrub growing up to 4-8’ tall and spreading 6-12’. It blooms in May before the leaves fully develop. The violet-purple flowers appear when plants are just a foot high. ‘Palibin’, a compact form, bears reddish purple buds that open to pale pink.

Of the late bloomers, the 5-9’ Korean cultivar S, patula ‘Miss Kim’ is outstanding. It is mildew-resistant and hardy in Zones 3 or 4-8. It bears fragrant purple in-the-bud flowers that fade to a pale pink or blue. The fall foliage often develops a good reddish color.

Hardy in Zones 3-7, S. X henryi ‘Lutece,’ with violet flowers, is another lovely late bloomer. The last of the lilacs to flower, and the only one that truly qualifies as a tree is the the 20-30’ Japanese tree lilac ( S. reticulata or S. amurensis). It is hardy in Zones 3-7 and has 6” plumes of creamy white florets with a scent simila to a privet’s. ‘Ivory Silk’ is a compact, heavily flowering 25’ cultivar that blooms at an early age.

Growing Lilacs

A lilac will transplant easily in spring to well-drained but moist humusy soil with a pH near 8.0. It should be planted in full sun or light shade. When established it tolerates some drought. It should be fertilized annually.

After flowering, remove unproductive trunks and allow two or three strong suckers to grow up as replacements. Eliminate all others.

Pieris japonica, andromedas or Japanese pieris, are beautiful broad-leaved evergreen shrubs. Find out facts and information on the best Pieris japonica (Japanese Pieris) varieties.

Pieris Japonica Facts

The most beautiful species is the Japanese pieris, or lily-of-the-valley bush. The branches cascade almost to the ground, their tips laden with dense tassels of somewhat fragrant ivory flowers in strands 3 to 6 inches long.

Brilliant foliage of Pieris Japonica

Pieris Japonica is a formal flowering broadleaved evergreen that is often used in formal landscape plantings, borders, and as foundation plantings. They can be grown in zones 5-8. You will find that this plant is a slow grower and will reach heights of 6-8’. It blooms from March to April, with white, urn-shaped, fragrant blooms.

The foliage is is evergreen, and lance-shaped, reaching 1 1/4 to 3 1/2” long. Pieris has an upright, cascading habit with lustrous green in summer. The new growth appears in bronze to wine-red colors.

This is especially showy in cultivars such as ‘Mountain Fire’, hardy in Zones 5 and 6-8. Cultivars with colorful colorful flowers include pink-flowered ‘Valley Rose’ and maroon-red ‘Valley Valentine’. A cultivar of mountain pieris, or fetterbush, (P. Floribunda ‘Millstream’) does better than Japanese pieris in the cooler regions of Zones 4 or 5-7. This vigorous moundd, 2-6’shrub is also smaller and less showy but more tolerant of alkaline soils. Its white or pink flowers are fragrant, its leaves, a dark green.

For small gardens, the charming dwarf pieris ( P. Taiwanensis ‘Prelude’) is just 2 1/2’ tall. It is hardy in Zones 6-8 and is a late bloomer with pure white flowers.

Growing Pieris Japonica

A young container grown or balled-and-burlapped pieris transplants easily in early spring to moist but well-drained humusy acid soil with a pH of 4.0-5.0. It does best with two to six hours of sun a day, but will withstand partial shade. Try to keep it sheltered from the wind. Allow mountain pieris to develop naturally. It may be pruned back in the spring if the wood is damaged.

Russian diamonds, also known as Russian diamond simulants, are impossible to tell, just by looking, from real and very expensive diamonds. This top grade of Russian synthetic diamonds, sold under such names as, Russian Brilliants, are set in 14K, 18K gold, and platinum settings. Lab created gemstones give consumers an opportunity to own diamonds and other gemstones that they would otherwise may be unable to afford.

You will find that these diamonds sparkle like no others, and are very reasonably priced and come with very high ratings from people that have purchased them. They vary greatly from regular simulated diamonds.

Detecting Synthetic Diamonds from Natural diamonds

As these diamonds become more popular, devices by De Beers was invented to help dealers be able to tell the difference between the two diamond types. Without these special devices store owners and those dealing with diamonds will have to rely on careful examination of the diamonds metallic inclusions, and using short-wave ultraviolet rays as a backup source.

Russian Diamonds Get an early start

Russia began experimenting with diamonds in the 1950’s. Commerical grade diamonds are used widely in industries around the world. Since diamonds are one of the hardest substances on earth, they are used in machinery to cut through an endless array of materials, including diamonds themselves.

They had been in competition with the De Beers family run business, known around the world to control the diamond industry. The Russians learned how to make diamonds. Although they were lab created diamonds, it wasn’t long before they were also producing a low grade diamond powder.

Today, the popularity of simulated diamonds and gem stones have grown remarkedly fast. The diamonds being produced are getting to be better quality, making it harder to tell the difference between the real natural diamonds without some of the specialized detecting devices. The price of the simulated Russian diamonds are going down, which also makes them a great buy for those not able to afford the luxury of a natural diamond. They come in many sizes and can be customed to fit many settings.

Uses of Bamboo Floor Mats

Bamboo floor mats are stylish and can be kept around moist areas such as next to pools, saunas and other types of rooms that utilize water and produce a lot of moisture into the surrounding air. Place them in front of your other accessories, such as a free standing mirror. Bamboo exerts a warm appearance because of its natural color and texture.

You can also use the mats in other places as well. Try using them at an entrance way or next to your patio door. The bamboo material will blend in nicely with the outdoors and can add to any type of tropical theme that you might have on your patio or deck area. Bamboo Mats are great for office use as well.

The craze right now is to want to make money from home with a home job. It sounds great and all sorts of people are hearing about how it can be done now that the Internet is everywhere. But in reality, it might not be all that it is cracked up to be and here is why.

Working from home is lonely and it is hard to adjust to that after being out in the workplace. If you have kids at home then it might not be quite as bad but then you will find it is harder to get work done. And once school starts and the kids are out of the house, it's back to being just you and the computer again.

When you work from home you are the boss and you are the only one that can push yourself to get things done. There is no boss looking over your shoulder to keep you from signing into Facebook or surfing the web. You have to plan out your day and figure out how to stick to your schedule without being distracted. It can be a lot harder to do that than you might think.

If you are going to start your own home business, don't think that there are any easy money making ideas out there. It is cutthroat in the business world and many people fail. A much greater number of people fail at starting their own home businesses than succeed and it will take a lot of hard work to be one of the successful ones.

Even if you are a success, you need to keep on top of your business and continue to think of new ways to bring in money. Every business needs to adapt to the ever changing marketplace and it will be your job to see that you keep up with the times and adapt as necessary.

All in all, a home business and working from home can be quite rewarding. However, it can be more of a challenge than you might think and it will take more hard work than you can imagine.

If you are tired of seeing your collection of DVDs and CDs scattered all over the place then consider purchasing a CD DVD storage unit. Not only will you finally keep those piles of DVDs off your floor but storage units will help protect your collection considering how much you have invested on it. Once you have decided to purchase your ideal storage unit, it is best to distinguish first where you will be placing it.

It is important to know how much space you have to figure out the appropriate size to purchase. It would be unfortunate if you purchase a unit that would not fit your room or the space you have allotted for it. There are quite a few storage units you can choose from that is out in the market. It is available almost in any shopping mall when you visit the furniture section. Next thing to decide on is how much is the budget you can shed out before you make your purchase.

Some designs can be quite expensive but this usually depends on how elaborate or complicated it looks and the material that was used to build the unit. If you care enough to have a unit that appears sophisticated, and at the same time made out of quality materials, then it well worth its cost. However, you do not have to spend extravagantly on your storage unit. There are simple designs that still look fabulous and classy while storing your collection fittingly.

If you think that you cannot afford a larger storage unit to accommodate the quantity of DVDs you have for your collection, then you may opt to choose some that you no longer want to keep and perhaps sell them with a discounted price or consider sharing them with your friends. This way you will have enough space to accommodate all your collection and if you are lucky, you may still have some left to deposit new DVDs in the future. Finding just the right DVD storage units can be easy once you have set your priorities.

Generally speaking there are two distinct types of anglers. The ones who over prepare for a fishing trip and the ones that under prepare. Most people consider fishing to be a fairly simple sport, but in reality being properly prepared can be the difference between catching fish on a regular basis. Being well prepared also reduces the chance of anything going wrong, which can become quite serious if you are on the water, and many anglers do spend much of their time there. The following are some simple ideas to help you have a successful and safe fishing trip.

Have a place for everything
Whether you fish from a boat or from the shore it is a good idea to keep your fishing tackle well organized. This means having a tackle box or storage that is built into your boat so that you can keep it all organized. The benefit of a tackle box is that you keep everything in one place (so you don't forget anything) and you can take it with you anywhere. Fishing rods are slightly harder to store, but there are some great products on the market to hold all kinds of rods while you are fishing. If you need to store a long rod, like a 7 weight trout fishing rod for example, try to purchase one that can be broken down into smaller sections.

Plan ahead
Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan on returning. This way they can send someone to look for you if you don't return. This is a general safety rule if you are traveling in a boat and/or into a wilderness area. In some jurisdictions there is a phone line that you can call and leave your details with the local authorities. Always carry a full complement of safety gear and a first aid kit in case of an emergency.

It is important not to be obsessed with safety or the stress of everything may stop you from having a good time. However, take some time to consider the issues before you go fishing so that you can be sure that you will return safely!

Free standing mirrors have many benefits. Mirrors are often used in the bedroom for getting a full length view of an outfit while getting dressed. The truth is that these floor mirrors can make an interesting addition to just about any room in your house, if you have the space.

The usefulness of a free standing mirror while one is getting dressed for the day or an event, cannot be disputed. This type of mirror allows you to see your entire body and can usually be adjusted to get a particular view. Free standing mirrors also have the advantage that they can be moved around the room or the home as needed, unlike your traditional wall mirror.

Free standing mirrors are made to go with any type of decor, from kids room decor to Victorian style decorating. This is part of the appeal of these mirrors and travertine tiles can be placed in other rooms in the home besides the bedroom. There are some beautiful and interesting floor mirrors that work well in the main rooms of the home, such as the living room.

Mirrors in general are appealing when decorating a room, since they can add light and dimension to a space while making the room look large than it already is. Free standing floor mirrors have these advantages as well. Since they are rather large, floor mirrors will reflect a lot of light, especially if they are positioned near a source of natural light such as a window or doorway.

Free standing mirrors can also add the charm of a different era and some of them are almost a work of art in themselves. Antique floor mirrors often have intricately carved frames that are quite beautiful. Such a mirror could become a focal point at one end of a living or dining room, either on it's own or grouped with other antiques.

If you have the room, a free standing mirror could also be useful in a bathroom or a child's room or just about any spot that you would like to add an interesting accent piece to, along with some extra light and style.
